Brick

The opening musical score of the film ‘Brick’ informs the audience that it is going to be an upsetting and intriguing film.  This is because the score used sad, moody and mysterious with a Western sound and a very thin texture.  The score starts as the company name is being displayed, this gets the audience straight into the film engaging their attention.

The opening sequence is also given a mysterious feeling by the first camera shots used, as an audience we do not see the male characters face until later on in the clip causing us to ask questions like “Who is he?” “Why is he there?” and “Where is he?”.  The only clues we are given which suggest he is a man, are his shoes and a half covered close up of a character.  In one of the earlier shots there is a close up of a pair of masculine shoes, we assume these are his shoes and that because they are masculine it is suggested that he is a man.  There is a close up of a male character, but we do not know whether this is the same character or someone else, as all we see is the characters face.  A focus pull is used in this shot, as the character is slowly revealed.  The camera angle used on this character is low, which suggests that he either has high power, or he is looking down on something he has done or that he has seen happen.

The next shots show the audience, using an eye line shot, what the character is looking at and that something has happened to another character who is lying on the floor, motionless.  This gives the idea that the character is dead.  We do not know for sure whether the character is dead or alive or whether it was the male character or someone else who did it.  A long master shot is then used, we now know the positioning of the characters and the distance between the two suggests that they do not know each other.  We notice that this character has long hair, which suggests that this character is a girl.  This is later confirmed when we see her shoes however, some information is hidden from the audience as we do not see the girls face due to it being covered by her hair.  From the close ups of different parts of the girl we see what she is wearing, her clothing looks smart which suggests that she either works, or attends high school.  Also, she is wearing white with could imply that this girl is innocent.  Her bright colours juxtapose the dullness and dirtiness of her surroundings, making her stand out in the middle of the sewer.  In these shots we also notice mud on her shoes as well as her leg.  This suggests that she could have been walking along the edge of the bridge, and slipped.  The track between the shots of him and her suggest that the male character has realized what he has done, and it also gives the feeling of them coming together.  The final tracked shot is of the girls arm and we notice that she is wearing colourful bracelets.

A graphic match is used here as these bracelets are shown in the next shot.  As an audience we know from the previous shots that this is the same girl, and some time in the past as she is now alive.  From this shot we also find out this girl was a student, we know this as she is by lockers and a school bell is heard.  The girl puts a note in a locker, this leaves us wondering ‘Who’s locker is it?” “What does the note say?” and “Is it the boys locker?”  This is revealed later in this shot, when a character is shown walking towards the locker.  We have a rough idea of who this person is as we recognise the trousers and shoes from the beginning of the opening.  A long shot is used to show the character looking around to see who might have posted the note, from this we can see that this character looks like the boy from earlier, but we cannot be certain until his face is shown.  A point of view shot is used to show the audience the note, it gives the details of a time a place.  From this we consider “Why didn’t the girl give it to him in person?” and “Does she not want to be known to him?”  This note is the end of the opening, leaving the opening on a cliff hanger makes the audience want to continue watching the film, we want to know why they might meet, what happens and I them meeting resulted in the girls death.
